Refresh My Memory
So I’m five weeks pregnant tomorrow, and I’m starting to feel it. I’ve been exhausted for nearly two weeks, partly due to the cold that is finally going away, and of course I’m tired because a tiny baby the size of a sesame seed (according to babycenter.com) has taken up residence in my uterus.
My hormones are raging, too. Yesterday I accused my husband of shrinking my favorite black sweater. It was big on me when I bought it two months ago, and now it’s a wee bit snug in the tummy area. So, as I’m yelling at the poor guy, he says, “Did it ever occur to you that maybe you’re getting a little bigger in that part of your body?” Of course I ran to the scale to check my weight. I’ve gained 4 pounds since last month. Granted, I had a thick cable knit sweater and jeans on, so technically it’s probably only 2 or 3 pounds. But still. Weight gain, already?
So now I’m freaking out about gaining weight because Geez Louise, I’m only 5 weeks and I shouldn’t be gaining weight or popping out this early, right? So then that bitch Google tells me that women tend to get bigger faster during a second pregnancy and I started to cry. I don’t know why, maybe because the progesterone is turning me into a crazy person?
I was talking on the phone with a friend tonight, and she asked me if I still had my maternity clothes from the last time. I remembered that I gave my maternity wardrobe to another friend last year when she was expecting. I called her to ask if she still had those clothes and she told me she gave them to Goodwill.
“I didn’t think you’d want them back since you were having trouble conceiving,” she told me. I didn’t know what to say so I just told her it was okay. But honestly? It would be nice to not have to go shopping for materity clothes in a few months. I did not have fun the first time I had to do it.
The stores around here do not make them big enough. I mean have you been to Target lately? I saw a pair of maternity pants in a size 4. Why on Earth do they put numbered sizes on maternity clothes? Are they trying to make moms-to-be feel like fat asses? Ugh. It’s hard enough to watch your belly grow, and realize your normal clothes will no longer fit. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find size appropriate, comfortable and stylish maternity clothes? I need all the help I can get. (I don’t need to buy anything yet, I just want to be prepared for when that time comes.)
I also realized that we don’t have a car seat or stroller anymore. We donated those items and some of Dawson’s old baby clothes to a woman who lost her stuff in a house fire. I don’t have the heart to ask for those things back. I would never dream of it. At least strollers don’t come in numbered sizes, so that’s an easy purchase. (Feel free to send your suggestions my way. I know the products and styles have changed through the years.)
In other baby related news, I’m starving all the time. I’m doing my very best to eat properly. I’ve cut out salt for the most part. I still have a dash on hard boiled eggs but that’s it. I had pre-eclampsia when I was pregnant with Dawson, and salt was the first thing to be elimated from my diet. I do not want to go through that again.
Doug is doing is best to be good to me. He knows I’m tired and he’s been wrangling Dawson so I can rest. God bless him. He’s also doing a lot of the cooking so that I can take care of other things. I love that man. I feel bad for being such and ass to him yesterday. I know he’ll forgive me. He’s just that kind of guy.
Okay, time to scavenge the fridge for something to snack on. I’m craving cucumbers. Gosh, it really is early for the food cravings isn’t it? Tell me, what kinds of stuff went on in your pregnancies? I want to know! Refresh my memory…

The “girls” were always so dang tender, then of course the morning sickness. I used to know the brand of every toilet I had the privilege to bow down to.

I’m probably not the best one to talk pregnancy memories, since I wasn’t always a happy pregnant person. But first, let me say congratulations, because I didn’t know you were expecting. That’s great!
I knew I was pregnant the last two times because I gained weight right away, so don’t feel too bad about gaining a few pounds. I think I started wearing maternity clothes within the first couple of months with the last one because I just wasn’t comfortable wearing anything tight around my belly.
My middle pregnancy wasn’t very fun. I couldn’t even look at food without feeling ill and my hubby doesn’t cook, so he ate a lot of microwaved dinners for a while. I was tired and cranky most of the time and I couldn’t concentrate on work at all.
The last pregnancy was very close to my first one. I didn’t feel as sick and enjoyed the pregnancy a lot more, even though I was working part-time and taking care of a toddler too.
I carried the girls very low, so walking toward the end wasn’t very fun, but it made for quicker deliveries.
Congratulations again.
Wishing you all the best.

Oh if only I remembered what went on at ANY stage of my pregnancies!! I never experienced cravings, the hubby actually complained about that…ha!…but I wish you all the luck in the world with this pregnancy.
Try resale shops for baby items and maternity clothes. Around here we have some that are targeted JUST towards expectant moms and children, perhaps there’s some in your area too!

Oh my, where do I start. First off the weight gain, I gained a quick 3-4 right away, mainly in the boobs. I also had the belly sticking out too, I think it’s due to the major slow down your digestive track takes (bloating, constipation, gas, all that fun stuff!).
My cravings didn’t really kick in until the fourth month. Mainly because I spent the first 3 months throwing up 5-15 times a day. But now my cravings are insane.(Today for example I had tomatoe juice, tomatoe soup, and a crappy store bought tomatoe. Two days ago I ate so much watermellon I thought I was going to need to take out a bank loan to get more).
When it comes to materity clothes, good luck. I can never find pants that are long enough. I did find some OK tops at Kohls. Motherhood has some nice, but pricie stuff.
Rest up, I know I could never seem to get enough.

I second the Kohls endorsement. Also, there is a maternity mall (three or four shops in one) in Brookfield by the mall. You could always come down for a visit and visit them too
There is a second hand maternity clothes shop in the Falls – I would guess there must be a few up by you too?

I was also going to suggest Kohl’s. Although I didn’t have it to shop at their stuff looks cute. I would still suggest Target for cheap tshirts, etc., although Kohl’s has great sales so maybe that’s your best bet. I also found great pieces at Ross. I normally hate that place (the one near me is nasty,) but I took the time to go through every.piece. of their maternity wear, tried a bunch on to make sure they were comfy, and came away with 7 pieces for $50. Really great buys that lasted through both of my pregnancies.
I never had morning sickness but smells made me feel and wish that I would. Cat box and cat food-blech! And I love mexican food but couldn’t even smell it during pregnancy.
And yes, the weight gain/tummy pooch was quicker with the second but I ultimately gained less-even with an 11 lb. baby!

I can’t help it. It’s so fun reading about your morning sickness, sore boobies and tummy pooch. I know. But, it’s been 7 years since I had my last baby and I sort of forget. I’m sure, if I think on it some more, it’ll all come back to me by the time you’re ready to pop

I neither mean to laugh or scare you, but have you considered that there may be more than one in there?
Also – Old Navy has reasonably priced and reasonably sized maternity clothing.
I wish I had known about it back when…

Congratulations! So sweet. Having to get off the caffeine, I swear I slept all the way through my pregnancies. Glad you’re getting over your cold. Take good care of yourself. (Like I needed to say that.LOL)

You can SO totally use the excuse of being pregnant to gain, like, 75 lbs! Way to go! I’m sure your husband won’t mind!
Congrats, Dana!
