Review: Amy Winehouse, Back to Black

A few days ago I bought the CD Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.  I can’t stop listening to it.

I’ve watched her debuts on The Tonight Show and Letterman, and she’s got a voice reminiscent of the 60s girl groups like The Supremes, The Shangri-Las and The Ronnettes, all of which I’ve loved as a child.  These were the artists my parents listened to when they were teenagers.

Amy has a textured vocal delivery, an almost raspy voice, combined with her contemporary song lyrics. Hailing from the U.K., she is truly inspiring and her music is full of soul and quite funky.

I watched several of her music videos on YouTube and immediately fell in love with the R&B/doo-wop/soul mix.  I bought the album last Saturday at Target.  You can purchase it here, if you’d like to stay in the comfort of your own living room.

Her hit song, Rehab is a catchy tune.  I’ve been singing it nearly all morning.  Check out this video of Rehab on YouTube.  It’s my favorite, thus far.

In several ways, Amy Winehouse riminds me of Etta James.  It is truly an album full of soul and musical style.
