What’s A World Without Trees?
When I was in elementary school, every April I looked forward to Arbor Day. I loved getting my free tree, which was usually a blue spruce. I remember walking home carefully, my tree held delicately in my hands, but firmly so as not to drop it or damage it. I couldn’t wait for my dad and mom to help me plant it in the back yard.
Since we bought the house I grew up in (my parents decided to buy a newer house and gave us a great deal), I look at the beautiful tree I planted nearly 20 years ago and it brings a twinkle to my eye. Watching something grow is magical.
Now that I’m a mother I want to teach my son the value of nature and the value of trees, flowers, plants and animals. Dawson is years away from school, but I have found a way to plant a tree (make that trees) with him.
I joined the National Arbor Day Foundation. With my membership fee of $10, I will receive 10 free trees, just in time for Arbor Day on April 27.
The trees are chosen by the Arbor Day Foundation based on your zip code and growing conditions in your area. There were nine different tree packages to choose from.
I’ve always wanted flowering trees, but I know Doug will be annoyed by all the flower petals on his precious lawn, so I chose the Autumn set with a combination of trees. It includes 2 White Flowering Dogwoods, 2 Flowering Crabapples, 2 Washington Hawthorns, 2 American Redbuds and 2 Goldenrain trees.
I can’t wait for these trees to arrive so we can start planting!
I encourage you, dear readers, to join the Arbor Day Foundation and start planting your trees! Remember: Arbor Day is April 27!

First of all, as a sentimental freak - that is so amazingly cool you can still look out and see the tree you planted with your family. That is incredible.
I want to order trees!!! I hate that I don’t know where we will be living at that point in time!! Darnit.
We have the most BEAUTIFUL redbuds in our yard right now, along with the “white twees” and “red twees” that my daughter loves so much. Tell your husband the petals either float away - or evaporate within days of falling off of the tree. It’s really sad how fast it’s all over.

I planted my first tree when I was in Kindergarden. We no longer own the house I grew up in, but a childhood friend of mine now lives there and the tree still stands.
To be honest, I hadn’t thought of Arbor Day, but we have a few new fruit trees set to arrive on Friday. We’re hoping to build up a small orchard on the far end of our property.
Thanks for the Arbor Day reminder. Planting trees is always a good idea.
