Fall Family Fun

Every September I get excited about Fall. Even though I love Summer and I’m always sad to see it end, there’s that excitement of the approaching football games, leaves changing, homemade apple pies, Halloween (especially Halloween) and finally, Thanksgiving.

It starts exactly September 1st, that I say goodbye to hot and humid weather and welcome “sweatshirt” weather. The only time of year you can wear your favorite Green Bay Packer sweatshirt and comfy jeans without freezing to death.

Another thing about Fall that I look forward to is Dawson’s birthday on September 16th. Since his special day has passed, we’ve been anxiously waiting for the season to officially begin with the changing and falling of tree leaves. We have been patiently waiting for Halloween, too. I love dressing up in costumes and I’m excited for Dawson to go trick-or-treating this year. Last year he wasn’t really that into it and we only went to a few neighbors’ houses. The day after Halloween is my mom’s birthday so we’ve been trying to think of what kind of gift to give her.

We also look forward to NFL football season, even though the GBP’s suck, I’m still a devoted fan. Maybe they’ll get lucky and win a game or two.

Today, we spent our day at Altenburg Farms. After church, we called my mom and invited her to go with us to pick out our “Very Special Pumpkin 2006″. This tradition was started last year in the Tuszke family, although we didn’t make it to Altenburg’s to pick out our “Very Special Pumpkin 2005″ (we grew it in the garden and it wasn’t very big).

    Pumpkins at Altenburg\'s

My brother Frank and my sister Rachel joined my mom, Dawson and me for the event. Altenburg’s is a 10-mile drive from my house. This weekend was the “opening weekend” for Fall Family Fun.

    hayride

We started with a hayride through a corn maze to the pumpkin patches. Dawson was excited to ride on the hay wagon pulled by the John Deere tractor. The beautiful trees surrounding the farm were already changing to bright hues of red, orange and yellow mixed with green. It was almost breathtaking. Once we chose our biggest pumpkin ever. Dawson got to sit on the tractor to have his picture taken before we went back to the produce stand. He loves tractors so much, he almost didn’t want to get out of the seat.

After the hayride we put our pumpkins in a wagon and took a walk to Boot Hill Cemetery. The “headstones” for the graves had hilarious sayings written on them. My mom and I got a kick out of them and she insisted I take a picture of every one for my scrapbook.

We then headed over to the checkout to pay for our goodies. We really had a wonderful time at Altenburg’s and I can guarantee we’ll do this again next year.

  1. I love fall too! Too bad here in Louisiana there isn’t much of one! Up in Illinois I used to look forward to the turning of the leaves and the change in temperature when that cool fall air moved in. It was just so festive. Here we are still wearing our tank tops and shorts and getting sunburned. UGH!

It looks like you guys had a lot of fun! That picture of Dawson in the pumpkin patch is just adorable. It looks professional.

  2. Thanks Kate! I loved taking those pictures. He was so darn cute!

I’d love to visit Louisiana again. It’s been several years. I had a friend who lived in Marshall,TX and when I’d visit, she’d take me to the casino in Shreveport.

  3. What great pumpkin pictures! ‘Specially of you and your “punkin”. :)

We can’t get our gourds until the week before Halloween. They barely last even that long in the FL heat!

  4. Oh Eric! Thank you for the compliment! And I’m sorry that the heat of Florida ruins the gourds, but at least you don’t have snow to look forward to! :)

  5. How cute! the wagon shot.

  6. How cute is that little jacket?

    I love it!
