Best Breast Cover Controversy

I was reading this article and became outraged. There are mothers who are upset because Baby Talk magazine’s cover shows a nursing baby. That’s what I see when I look at the cover of this magazine. In fact I still get this subscription for free and I loved this cover. I didn’t see a “big fat breast”, I saw a mother giving nourishment to her baby. Why, oh WHY is there always someone who is offended by this?

I don’t mean to sound like a big old bitch, but sometimes I feel as though these women who complain are jealous. I know I might be wrong, but hear me out. I think they are pissed off because either they chose not to breastfeed, physically couldn’t breastfeed, or just like to insult mothers who DO breastfeed. The excuse one woman used that she was afraid her 13 year old son would see it is a cop out. Especially because this woman breastfed all three of her children!! This is a natural part of life. Women have babies, we nurse them from the breast, the health benefits are numerous for Baby and Mommy. I could go on and on.

I’m just appalled that there are still people in this world who can’t get over the breast. This is not a sex thing. It’s a feeding thing. Do we get uncomfortable when a mother dog nurses her puppies? Do we get upset when a baby calf suckles mama holstein’s teet? Of course not. Why should this be any different?

Ugh. I’m still raging mad about this. I will definitely be writing Baby Talk to PRAISE THEIR COVER!!

  1. I was JUST writing my own post about this.

I can’t get over people being so stupid.

    I HATE STUPID PEOPLE

  2. You go girl! Good for you. I’m in total agreement. People need to get a grip out there.

  3. Queen! I knew you would be steamed like me. I just can’t believe it. Or maybe I can, but I’m still stunned!

Brenda, it’s so ridiculous. It’s not a sexual thing, it’s a nutrition thing. Ugh!

  4. Thank you for bringing this to my attention I was not aware of it. I agree with you. This mad me SO mad and I’m not even a mother (yet). This is the e-mail I sent to “Baby Talk” Magazine:
I saw the article about your magazine cover with the woman breast feeding her baby. I wanted to say that I think it is WONDERFUL! The women who were “outraged” over this cover should be ashamed of themselves!!!! A breast is first and fore most a form of nurturing. I can’t understand these women talking about how “sexual” it is. It’s only sexual because THEY think it is! I am disgusted by these women who should be more understanding of the way of life. Where are these women’s protests against the celebrities who walk around half naked on TV or displayed on magazine covers? THAT is what is sexual NOT breast feeding. I’m sorry that in today’s world a wonderful part of being a mother is being protested. I say KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and “Thank You” from those of us who feel breast feeding is a way of life not a sexual display.

  5. FC, Thank you so much for e-mailing them! I do believe they need to know there are MANY women who appreciate this cover for what it is. A mother feeding her baby. Plain and simple.

  6. Hey stranger! Love the new digs.

I wonder what % of complaints came from men? I’m guessing less than 1%.

  7. Ben! I don’t think men really complain unless it’s their wife’s breast on the cover. Yenno?

  8. I was totally a undercover breat feeder. It was my own privacy issue. and while I mever really feel entirely comfortable around people when they do. IT doesnt bother me to ever make a comment and it is never sexual. This photo is amazing and beautiful!
Hey ben! I bet there were NO men complaining. Not when there is a big nurishment boob like that!

  9. I’m with you, Dana. Right after my oldest was born, I was flying from Panama to the US, and was seated next to a couple in their 40s. becasue I was still young and unsure of myself, I said to the man, “You wouldn’t mind if I nurse my son, would you?” He said no, but his bitchy wife leaned over and said, “But *I* would.” So I didn’t nurse him the entire trip, and I was sore and leaking and an emotional wreck by the time we landed. That woman had no right to say that, and I was an idiot for listening to her. Nursing is natural, and it should be encouraged, not seen as shameful and indecent.

    *tucks away soapbox*

Hope you’re all doing well. Our heat wave has broken, so we’re finally able to go out and enjoy outdoor activities. We’re headed out on the boat tomorrow, so it should be a good day. Enjoy your weekend and take care!

  10. Honor! I would have spurted some milk in her face. I’m just that kind of gal. =) You have a great time on the boat! My vacation starts Sunday. e blissful days off. I’m SOOOOOO gonna enjoy it. However, my period is making an unexpected visit and I’m a bit pissed about that!

  11. kudos to you, dana for speaking out! unfortunately, neither of my girls latched on well, so i pumped with both of them (leah for 6 mo. and alana for 1 yr). it’s a fact of life and i wish those who are “disturbed” by it would simply shut their mouths. do they not realize how retarded they sound?

ps. and if i didn’t know this picture were on babytalk with a title related to nursing, i wouldn’t even know it was a breast. kind of looks like an elbow to me. ;)

  12. Just a thought, but the only women that I know that freak out about breastfeeding in open view are the same women that freak out about “sexuality” in Hollywood and all of that nonsense.

Maybe we shouldn’t be so uptight about breasts in general.

Maybe then we could concentrate on things that really matter.

  13. Quite frankly, I’m not a mother and do not plan to have children…but nonetheless, I agree with you 100%!

As you pointed out, it’s not a sex thing…and no one gets upset when their dog nurses their puppies.

Bah! The issue annoys me too.

  14. Excellent post and I loved this cover as well. The women complaining are probably the same ones who fake orgasms. I was a nursing Nazi. Hello? That’s why you actually have breasts! Not for pastys.

  15. [...] have expressed my views on this subject before. But when will the criticism toward nursing moms end? When will we stop [...]
